NIGERIAN SPORT INDUSTRY

Despite the many challenges faced by the Nigerian sports industry in 2018, the year 2019 offers yet another opportunity to try to become bigger and more impactful economically.

In this piece, I attempt to proffer some solutions to the problems and how Nigerian sport can make use of some of the available digital tools to grow.

The growth of digital technologies has changed the face of the traditional television model worldwide.

Video streaming, video-on-demand (VOD) and over-the-top (OTT) technology are allowing many content creators to bypass traditional TV and to reach the consumers directly on their smart TVs, computers and mobile phones.

The growth of platforms like Netflix and ROK has shown that traditional TV will become outmoded in the not too distant future. For sports, new entrants like DAZN are changing the game entirely.

The OTT platform is buying up sports broadcast rights at a rate that is alarming to traditional broadcasters.

It is changing the dynamics of sports content and by the time it reaches the African market, traditional sports broadcasters will find it hard to challenge.

The OTT model is an opportunity for Nigerian sports properties to explore in order to distribute their content across wider boundaries.

While it is true that many sports events in Nigeria are hardly filmed for content due to many reasons that can range from the high cost of production as well as the pay-to-screen model of traditional broadcasters, digital technology can help sports property owners eliminate some of the cost of traditional TV.

The fact is that TV has been important to the growth of sports events and athletes over the years. Nigerian sport has struggled to make an impact because it has ignored this model.

Traditional TV has not been able to help because owners have preferred to use cheaper imported sports content instead of working with local sports rights owners to produce and grow their content.

The time is ripe for Nigerian sports event owners to take the big step of financing the production of their events and then finding digital platforms to distribute.

There are free platforms that include Facebook, YouTube and Twitter, among others, that can work in growing their events. With painstaking effort, they can eventually turn around the fortunes of their sports.

The next question is how to monetise the content. Across the world, several sports federations are using OTT and digital subscription to shore up income.

Several international federations (Ifs) now own online TV channels where fans can watch competitions on their PCs and mobile phones.

During the 2018 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Spain, FIBA charged $5.99 (2,150 Naira) monthly per subscriber on its Live Basketball TV to stream the games.

The growth of Nigerian sports will also be affected by digital marketing. Organisations like Google are increasingly determining what kind of news we receive on our mobile phones every day.

While the kind of content one receives is tailored to one’s interest, it is important that Nigerian sports events make use of this technology to ensure they can be seen by more people.

Every morning, Google puts the top sports news items from the clubs and events that I follow on the app dashboard.

During the 2018 World Cup, Google ensured that all the games were easily accessible to users.

Many Nigerian mobile phone users were inundated with news and match fixtures, highlights and more via Google. This could be an important avenue for growing local sports events.

From what I have observed, many Nigerian sports property owners do not understand the content part of their events. They are satisfied to promote events, stage it and ask journalists to cover for news. The place of content is still usually overlooked.

2019 is an opportunity to ensure that events are milked for their content that can be promoted via digital channels with an eye on monetisation for good returns on investment.

Djinee started off as a Dj with soundcity and for some years, he gave a wonderful representation of himself as a presenter for the period which he hosted so many music shows. The United Nations are fuelling insurgency and perpetrating indiscipline in the land (Nigeria). They donated about 100 vehicles to the police then, when I raised an alarm about Richard Templar book about unhappiness with the UN underlined in the book that means under the UN they hid all the vehicles and the vehicles are not patrolling here in Lagos or any other state. They are also sponsoring coups in the country Nigeria by breaking our constitution that says in section (1) that no person or group of persons should take any part of the country by force also Section (12) that is no treaty between other country and the federation shall have any force of law to the extent to which it has been ensured by the National Assembly. They then invited other continents to Nigeria and that if the federation is at war under Section (64) which relate to gadgets.

They also invited the Paris Club IMF, World Bank to rape the children of this country Nigeria of their future by corruption and also using the letter of the word to be superior to be spirit of the word and also use a slang for this which they call dis which is not in the dictionary.

They also after the monument which I made a model of which has been touted to be the mother of all buildings like the Taj Mahal in India. Gospel music is a genre of Christian music. The creation, performance, significance, and even the definition of gospel music varies according to culture and social context. Gospel music is composed and performed for many purposes, including aesthetic pleasure, religious or ceremonial purposes, and as an entertainment product for the marketplace. Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics. Gospel music can be traced to the early 17th century,^[1] with roots in the black oral tradition. Hymns and sacred songs were often repeated in a call and response fashion. Most of the churches relied on hand clapping and foot stomping as rhythmic accompaniment. Most of the singing was done a cappella.^[2] The first published use of the term "gospel song" probably appeared in 1874. The original gospel songs were written and composed by authors such as George F. Root, Philip Bliss, Charles H. Gabriel, William Howard Doane, and Fanny Crosby.^[3] Gospel music publishing houses emerged. The advent of radio in the 1920s greatly increased the audience for gospel music. Following World War II, gospel music moved into major auditoriums, and gospel music concerts became quite elaborate.

URBAN/ CONTEMPORARY GOSPEL:

Urban/contemporary gospel is a modern form of Christian music that expresses either personal or a communal belief regarding Christian life, as well as to give a Christian alternative to mainstream secular music. Musically, it follows the trends in secular urban contemporary music.

Urban/contemporary gospel is a recent subgenre of gospel music. Christian hip hop is a subtype of urban/contemporary gospel music. Although the style developed gradually, early forms are generally dated to the 1970s, and the genre was well established by the end of the 1980s.

ORIGINS AND DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN GOSPEL MUSIC:

Protestant hymns and African-American spirituals make up the basic source material for traditional black gospel music, which in turn is the most significant source of urban/contemporary gospel. Urban/contemporary gospel has kept the spiritual focus of the traditional black gospel music, but uses modern musical forms.

Urban/contemporary gospel derives primarily from traditional black gospel music, with strong influence from, and strong influence on, many forms of secular pop music. Due to strong racial divisions in 20th century American culture, urban/contemporary gospel developed specifically out of the African-American musical traditions (Bream 1991). The equivalent music from white American culture is contemporary Christian music (Bream 1991). Although the racial lines have blurred in some areas, particularly with urban musical styles, these divisions are still evident in the industry (Burdick 2009). The color line divides artists with extremely similar musical styles on the basis of their race, and unites artists with divergent styles (such as rap and pop) on the same basis in industry reporting, marketing choices, and awards like the Grammy and Dove awards (Bream 1991).

During the 1960s and 1970s, hit songs like The Clark Sisters's "You Brought the Sunshine" Edwin Hawkins's "Oh Happy Day" and Andrae Crouch's "Take Me Back" were significant milestones in the development of urban/contemporary gospel music. Andrae Crouch is called the "godfather of contemporary gospel" (Waldron 2006).

Mineral Resources are pure inorganic substance that occurs naturally in the earth’s crust. All of the Earth’s crust, except the rather small proportion of the crust that contains organic material, is made up of minerals. Some minerals consist of a single element such as gold, silver, diamond (carbon), and sulphur.

Minerals are valuable natural resources being finite and non-renewable. They constitute the vital raw materials for many basic industries and are a major resource for development.

MINERAL RESOURCES IN NIGERIA AND THEIR IMPORTANCE

1. CRUDE OIL: Nigeria is the largest oil producing country in Africa. According to proven oil and gas reserves, our country has 23 billion barrels of crude oil and 160 trillion cubic meters of gas according to nigeria.gov.ng. The major part of oil deposits is situated in the Delta basin in Abia, Akwa Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Imo, Ondo, and Rivers states. The deposits are multi-layered. The depth of productive layers on land is 1500 - 2000 m and on the shelf is 2500-3600 m. are multi-layer, the depth of productive strata on land is 1500-2000 m, on the shelf - 2500-3600 m. Many oil deposits have gas caps. Nigerian oil is low-sulfur with high paraffin content. Its gravity is 36 API for light types and 20-23 API for medium and heavy types. Crude oil provides the lion's share of Nigeria revenues.

2. TALC: Nigeria has more than 40 million tones of talc deposits. They are situated in Niger, Osun, Kogi, Ogun and Kaduna states. The talc industry produces 3 thousand tons of talk a year. Talc is used in one of the most diverse branches of industrial minerals in the world. The extraction of huge talc deposits can satisfy local and export needs.

3. GYPSUM: Gypsum has great importance in cement manufacturing. It is also used for other demands. At present, cement production is 8 million tons a year when Nigerian demand is 9.6 million tons. We need to increase the capacity to meet our needs. Approximately, one billion tons of gypsum deposits lie in many Nigerian states.

4. IRON ORE: The country owns more than 3 billion metric tons of iron ore deposits in Kogi, Enugu and Niger States and the Federal Capital Territory. Iron ore mining carries out at Itakpe (Kogi state), and we receive up to 67 percent of iron.

5. LEAD AND ZINC: About 10 million tons of lead and zinc deposits are situated in eight Nigerian states. The proven reserves include 5 million tons. Lead and zinc deposits can be used both for local needs and for export.

6. BENTONITE AND BARYTE: These minerals are the main components of the drilling fluid for all types of oil wells. The baryte mined in Nigeria has special gravity 4.3. More than 7.5 million tons of baryte have been found in Taraba and Bauchi states. Huge bentonite deposits of 700 million tons are situated in many states of Nigeria and can be massively developed and exploited.

7. GOLD : Gold is the 3rd most precious metal in the world. Nigeria has proven deposits of both alluvial and primary gold in the shale belt of the country. It is situated in the south-western part of the country. The reserves are mainly alluvial and today are being extracted in small quantities.

8. GEMSTONES: Gemstones are mined in different parts of Plateau, Kaduna and Bauchi states for many years. Among them there are sapphire ruby aquamarine emerald tourmaline topaz garnet amethyst zircon fluorspar Gem mining in Nigeria is an up-and-coming industry and requires significant investment. Precious gems always were and will be highly appreciated in the whole world.
