WHAT ARE THE PRINCIPLES OF SOCIAL CASE WORK
INDIVIDUALIZATION:
This principle helps the social worker to relate with the client. It help social workers to see individuals with their own differences, cultural and ethnic diversity. Individualization helps social workers see beyond what the client see and feels. It enlightens the social worker on the way to handle a client and how a client’s problem can be solved.
ACCEPTANCE:
This is the ability of a social worker to appreciate and recognize a person’s positive worth as an individual with feelings, without condemning the client. Acceptance is accepting the client with his/her good and bad qualities, strengths and weaknesses regardless of his/her behavior. Acceptance help a social worker to understand his/her client and build a genuine professional relationship that allows the client to be comfortable and want to talk freely with the social worker.
COMMUNICATION:
Social workers continue to increase their knowledge by striving to gain more knowledge in other to apply them in their professions, to help individuals with problems relating to social works. Communication skill is very important to social workers.
MEANINGFUL RELATIONSHIP:
The relationship between a social worker and his client is very important, it is the route that will lead to change or transformation in a client’s life. Social Workers build strong relationships with people in other to promote and enhance the standard of living of individuals or the well being of individuals.
EXPRESSION OF FEELINGS:
As professionals, social workers, allow their client to express their feelings, with this they are one step ahead of solving the clients problems.  As a social worker going beyond “the facts” is necessary to uncover the hidden feelings.

NON JUDGEMENTAL ATTITUDE:
The relationship of a client and a social work depend heavily on if the social worker is judgmental or not.  As social workers we are not meant to make decisions for clients but to imply a good behavior and a new way of life.
CONTROLLED EMOTIONAL INVOLVEMENT:
Social worker should not respond to a client’s situation in a way that will make him or her feel coldness or lack of interest. Social workers should not over identify a client.
CLIENT’S SELF DETERMINATION:
The principle of self determination is about figuring out the client’s need to freedom in making decisions. Social workers have the responsibility to create a working relationship in which choice can be exercised.
SELF AWARENESS:
A caseworker must know his strength and limits, if a caseworker is unable to handle a client, he/she must hand the client over to a component authority.
SOCIAL FUNCTIONING:
An individual must know his obligation or role depending on the society or environment he/she is living in.
TUNING BEHAVIOR:
The mind, body and soul must be in full experiences. It’s very necessary for right inception and thinking.
SOCIAL LEARNING:
This is a per-requisite to solve the problems of societies. It implies focusing attention on organizations, getting and solving new problems and evaluating problems.
SOCIAL CONFIDENTIALITY:
This implies that no information obtain from a client should be disclosed to anybody. This should remain between the client and the social worker.

THE REASONS WHY FISH SURVIVE IN COLD ICE OCEAN ARE:
In icy cold winters months, lakes and rivers freeze over forming ice, the fish and other aquatic animals manage to survive. Animals like seals, penguins, walruses and a wide variety of sea birds are all fish eaters, they live in the arctic and Antarctic circle, amidst the ice caps. The land is completely frozen. Yet these animals manage to live in this region. How do they do it?
The icy waters of the arctic and Antarctic oceans support a great amount of marine life for millions of years, life has remained undamaged making it possible for these animals to adapt themselves to these partial of excretions.  
But they do get some help from nature. All liquid have a boiling point and a freezing point. When water boils at a certain temperature it turns into steam. When it cools to a certain temperature it freezes and become ice. Water boils at 100 degree Celsius (1000c) and freezes at 00c. When the outsides temperature falls below the freezing point of waters, lakes and rivers yet frozen.
However only the top layer of lakes or river freeze. Underneath the frozen upper layer, the water remains in its liquid form and does not freeze. Also, oxygen is trapped beneath the layer of ice. As a result, fish and other aquatic animals find it possible to live comfortably in the frozen lakes and ponds.
But why doesn’t the entire body if water freeze, like a giant, lake – sized ice cubes? Generally, all liquids expand on heating, but water is an exception to this rule. If water is heated, its volume continues till the temperature rises to 40c. At temperatures over 40c water starts expanding. It then keeps expanding with the further rise in temperature, till finally at 1000c it turns into steam.
In other words, at 40c, water has the least volume (occupies the least amount if space) and maximum density (is at its heaviest) this irregular expansion if water called anomalous expansion. This anomalous expansion plays an important role by only freezing the upper layer in lakes and rivers.
During winter months in colder countries the outside or atmosphere temperature is very low it drops to below freezing and the upper layers of waters in the lakes and ponds start cooling. When the temperature of the surface layers fall to 40c the waters body acquires maximum density and sinks down. The water that sinks down displaces water below, and the lower layers of water simultaneously rise up. This also gets cooled to 40c and again sinks down.
When the temperature of the water body finally goes down below 40c the density or heaviness of water decreases and as a result water does not sink down. The surface water finally freezes at 00c while the lower part still remains at 40c. the light frozen layer of ice floats on top.
Ice does not allow heat to pass through it easily, so the freezing of the waters below is a very slow process. At depth below 30 meters, temperatures are cold and stables, but food is source. As a result animals have adapted to this situation by growing more slowly.
There are other dangers that fish face in freezing waters like deaths. The body fluid of an ordinary fish can solidify if the temperature of the surrounding water drops below 50c, so Arctic and Antarctic fish have adjusted to their surrounding in an interesting manner.
Certain species of cod, polar fish have a reduced metabolic rate and produce anti freeze molecules called glycoprotein to reduce the freezing point of their body fluids. One could look at it as the fishy version of bears hibernating, a survival tactic that has seen theses friends outlive many other creature on earth.

THE STORY THAT MOTIVATES ME
This story motivates me a lot and makes me want to grow through my struggles and have the strength I need to be who I want to be in life.
First of all, I would love to be a Radio Personality which would have me be that person who introduces genres of music and discuss about each of it, I would also be hosting talk shows, take calls from listeners, interview celebrities or guests, give news, weather, traffic, or sports information. To do this, I would either be using the voice tracking techniques or broadcasting live.
How would I be all this aforementioned above? Even I don’t know how it’s going to happen but I know at the end that would be me doing all that just like DJ Toolz my favorite.
They say God who created us knows everything about who we are and what we are definitely going to become and purposely create challenges of different kinds in our paths to make us understand what it feels to be successful at the end. So we have to be ready to face all that come through to us in our way to become whoever we have dreamt to become and also live that life to the extreme.
This story is about a butterfly in its cocoon.
A man found a cocoon of  butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to force its body through that little hole.
Until it suddenly stopped making any progress and looked like it was stuck. So the man decided to help the butterfly and took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bit of the cocoon. The butterfly then emerged easily, although it had a swollen body and small, shriveled wings.
The man didn’t think of anything of it and sat there waiting for the wings to enlarge to support the butterfly. But that didn’t happen. The butterfly spent the rest of its life unable to fly, crawling around with tiny wings and a swollen body.
Despite the kind heart of the man, he didn’t understand that the restricting cocoon and the struggle needed by the butterfly to get itself through the small opening were God’s way of forcing fluid from the body of the butterfly into its wings. To prepare itself for flying once it was out of the cocoon.
This story made me understand that in life, there are suppose to be challenges which we must accept wholly and learn how to find our way out ourselves without anyone helping us in order to make us be a stronger and better person of who we want to be.
Finally, this makes me always tell myself that “No matter how hard or impossible it may seem or look, the only failure is giving up” because our struggles in life develop our strengths and without struggles, we never grow and never get stronger, so it is important for us to tackle challenges on our own, and not be relying on help from others.

FAMILY


WHAT IS A FAMILY?
A family is a group of people consisting of father, mother and their children living together as a unit. a family can also be defined as a group of people who are related to each other by blood, such as a mother, a father, and their children.

STATE THE TWO TYPES OF FAMILY
Nuclear Family
The nuclear family is the traditional type of family structure. This family type consists of two parents and children.

Extended Family

The extended family structure consists of two or more adults who are related, either by blood or marriage, living in the same home. This family includes many relatives living together and working toward common goals, such as raising the children and keeping up with the household duties.
THE QUALITIES OF A GOOD FAMILY ARE:
1.    Love for one another
2.    They must not be greedy
3.    Satisfied with whatever they have
4.    They must be honest with one another
5.    They must be disciplined and well behaved to protect the name of the family.
ROLES OF THE FATHER
1.    He provides food, shelter and clothing’s for the family.
2.    He helps the children with their school assignments.
3.    He pays the children school fees and buys their books
4.    He protects the whole family from danger.
5.    He helps the children to develop good characters.

ROLES OF THE MOTHER
1.    She takes care of the house by sweeping, washing etc
2.    She cooks for the family
3.    She takes care of the children.
4.    She protects and takes care of the family.
5.    She trains the children to develop good moral behaviors

ROLES OF THE CHILDREN
1.    Children have a duty to try and stay safe (avoid what they know is dangerous when they see they are approaching it).
2.    The children help their mother in doing household chores like cooking, washing & sweeping.
3.    They run errands for their parents.
4.    The children also assist
5.    Children have a duty to let their parents and guardians know when something is wrong, they think something may be wrong, or they are simply afraid or hurt.

The United Nations are fuelling insurgency and perpetrating indiscipline in the land (Nigeria). They donated about 100 vehicles to the police then, when I raised an alarm about Richard Templar book about unhappiness with the UN underlined in the book that means under the UN they hid all the vehicles and the vehicles are not patrolling here in Lagos or any other state. They are also sponsoring coups in the country Nigeria by breaking our constitution that says in section (1) that no person or group of persons should take any part of the country by force also Section (12) that is no treaty between other country and the federation shall have any force of law to the extent to which it has been ensured by the National Assembly. They then invited other continents to Nigeria and that if the federation is at war under Section (64) which relate to gadgets.
They also invited the Paris Club IMF, World Bank to rape the children of this country Nigeria of their future by corruption and also using the letter of the word to be superior to be spirit of the word and also use a slang for this which they call dis which is not in the dictionary.
They also after the monument which I made a model of which has been touted to be the mother of all buildings like the Taj Mahal in India. It has also be rated as a wonder of the world also because I nicknamed my healthy of high birth daughter Heiress Paris because she is a heiress to my large fortune estimated to be above 300,000,000,000 billion pounds from my innovation patent idea, ideas, creativity, music etc.
O is the 15th alphabet. Owe is also pronounced like O and wherever O is in a word here in Nigeria you are owed whatever it is for example: O.P.E.C Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (O=PEC) which is the same as O-Peculiar and a Peculiar person is an exceptional, unique and distinct person with talent, innovational idea, ideas or creativity because they think outside the box they continue to owe the person until they can convert or covet or deprive the person of what is illegally his.
Since there are only odd and even people in the world hence everybody is odd to each other even twins birthed together are different but the even person is similar to the peculiar person and stands out
 It is an international organization hence an international conspiracy.
 Oil was first discovered in Olobiri in Calabar which means you used girls/ women for diabolical purposes.
Another evidence is that they the oil cartels especially in the Arab countries made Diezani Allison-Madueke as the OPEC Chairman when they despise women to have authority over them. Also it was rumoured that they used my twin from one of my girlfriend that was pregnant for me through Diezani that is why she was rewarded with the post.
In the film the Ultimate Gift it was explained there that I should be given up to 2 billion dollars depending on OPEC rates.
I have been a peculiar person for over 20 years but they are still owing me till date and Chevron one of the seven sisters have a place just 3 minutes from our hotel and I can prove their motive is to deprive me of my fortune success also children including the highway round the country which was supposed to be  similar to the M25 in London and the Autobahn in Europe since we had a fight over the road they construct to their site in our vicinity.

WHAT IS ILLNESS?
Illness is a broad term that defines the poor state of mind, body, and, to a certain extent, spirit. It is the general feeling of being sick or unwell (outside the person’s belief of good health). It can also be defined as A state of bad health or disease
COMMON ILLNESS IN THE HOME
v  Common cold:
Most children will get up to five colds a year and this is probably the most common reason children miss school. Symptoms include a sore throat, headache, loss of appetite, mild fever and a blocked/ runny nose. Most colds clear up on their own but you can use supplements which contain added zinc, Echinacea and vitamin c which have all been shown to shorten the duration of the cold. 
v  Acne:
Acne is probably the commonest skin condition seen at the Medical Centre. The majority of people will have grown out of their acne by their late teens so that on the whole we see only the more severe and persistent cases. In the past, diet, dirt and grime have been blamed for the condition but it is now known that these have little or nothing to do with its cause. The primary defect seems to be an inherited disposition for the cells which line the duct carrying oils from the sebaceous glands to the surface of the skin to thicken, thus blocking the duct. There is then a build-up of oils which are broken down by bacteria into fatty acids. The enzymes the bacteria use for this then irritate the surrounding tissues. There is also a tendency for the oil glands to over produce.
v  Backache:
Despite what is often written, the human back is well adapted to an upright posture, but it is not well adapted to lifting heavy weights, being scrunched up in a rugby scrum, being repetitively shock-loaded for mile after marathon mile or being hunched up over a desk for hours on end.
Whatever the causes of backache few of them are serious in the student age group. If you do a lot of unfamiliar bending, stooping, or heavy lifting, as for example in gardening or furniture moving, you may expect your back muscles to ache for a few days, just like any other overworked muscles. The usual remedies like soaking in a hot bath, lying in a comfortable position and taking a couple of simple pain-killing tablets give a lot of relief.
Unfortunately, study has to go on while the backache gets better, if indeed it is not the cause of the aching in the first place. As exams get closer, tension is added, by the feeling that the aching is making study quite impossible. All symptoms seem to get worse when one is under pressure.
v  Chickenpox:
A contagious illness that causes an itchy rash and red spots all over the body. Symptoms develop about 14 to 16 days after exposure to the virus and include a fever, headache, cough, and a sore throat. The itchy rash appears after the first symptoms start and it can take up to 10 days until a person is no longer contagious. Vitamins believed to be beneficial to those suffering from chicken pox include vitamin B-12, vitamin A with beta carotene, and vitamins D, E, and K.
v  Conjunctivitis:
Commonly known as pinkeye, is an inflammation of the conjunctiva. It is very common in children, mostly because it is highly contagious. It is caused by many of the same bacteria and viruses responsible for colds. Foods rich in Vitamin A and B2 may also be helpful in the treatment of conjunctivitis.

v  Gastroenteritis:
A primary cause of diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting most often caused by the rotavirus infection, or from E. coli, or Salmonella, parasites.  Symptoms typically include abdominal cramps but may also include a fever, nausea, vomiting and dehydration. An over-the-counter probiotic can help shorten the duration of the illness and rehydrate drinks will prevent dehydration. 
v  Hand, foot and mouth disease:
Primarily caused by enteroviruses. Symptoms include a low-grade fever followed by sores or blisters in the mouth, on the palms, fingers, soles of the feet, and on the buttocks. It is contagious and treatment includes pain medication. Some studies have shown a deficiency in vitamin A can worsen the disease, so eating a diet rich in leafy greens, squashes and liver can help shorten the duration of the illness.
CAUSES OF ILLNESS
An illness can be caused by a number of factors such as the following:
·         The presence of diseases – Usually, illness occurs because the body has an underlying disease. The body is designed to provide a natural response to any abnormality or threat, whether it’s a bacterium, virus, or excessive production of immature cells. But in the process, such reaction can make a person feel sick. A good example is allergy. Allergy develops when the immune system tries to kill the threat and releases histamines in the process. Nevertheless, a person may also have a disease but not feel unwell. Diseases such as HIV, AIDS, and even cancer can take months or years before they progress and make a person feel unwell.
·         Hypochondriasis – Hypochondriasis is the reason why people can “feel ill” even without a disease. This is a condition that refers to the abnormal or moderate to severe anxiety of having a disease. A simple change in the body temperature may be considered by a hypochondriac as a fever or a symptom of a serious disease like cancer. Hypochondriasis is further fueled these days by the Internet. A person can now quickly and easily search for symptoms or self-diagnose.
·         Stress – Stress is a natural response of the body to a trigger. The body is designed to take either a fight-or-flight mode when in a stressful situation. Either way, it can increase the heart rate, blood pressure, and can lead to the production of a hormone called cortisol, which can make a person ill when stress becomes chronic.
·         Malnutrition – As a complex structure, the body needs different kinds of enzymes, vitamins, minerals, and other macro and micronutrients to function properly. In the long term, if the body becomes deficient in any of these, it can feel ill.
PREVENTION OF ILLNESS
·         Get your health screening tests (health screenings for women or health screenings for men). Lots of people have weird logic around health screening tests. They say things like “I don’t want to know if something is wrong with me.” But, these tests are specifically chosen because catching the specific illnesses early can make a huge difference in the course of the illness and can even work as disease prevention. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force does not recommend tests that don’t matter to the health outcome. So be sure to have these tests done. If you need help finding a doctor, try this guide to doctors in your area (choose the specialty “preventive medicine,” “general practice” or “family practice”).
·         Don’t smoke. It is simply incredible how much smoking shortens both the length of a person’s life and the quality. If you do smoke, quitting is your number one health priority. Try these smoking cessation resources.
·         Be active. Keeping yourself healthy means moving and using your body. There are standardized exercise recommendations for people. Exercise has a number of benefits, including improving your sex life and giving you more energy. Work exercise into your daily/weekly schedule for years more life.
·         Eat healthy. Sure, we all know that we should eat a healthy diet, but did you know that adding just two servings of fruit and vegetables a day could increase your life expectancy? Building healthy eating habits is possibly the single most important thing you can do to protect your health, prevent disease, and minimize the severity of any conditions you already have. Besides, once you get used to healthy foods, they taste better and give you more energy than all the processed junk foods out there (really, you just need about a week of no cheating to start feeling the difference).
·         Lose weight. Turns out that losing weight isn’t as hard as everyone makes it out to be. If you switch out processed foods for fresh produce and get rid of sodas and other sugary foods you can save hundreds of calories a day. Start there.
·         Take your medicine. There are some wonderful preventive medicines out there like statins (which lower cholesterol). These medicines can prevent heart attacks and even help reverse illnesses. For example, men older than 45 should talk with their doctor about taking a daily aspirin to help prevent heart disease (men younger than 45 with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, or who smoke should talk to their doctor about it too). Also, everyone should stay up-to-date with their immunizations (most people 50+ should have a flu shot each year and most people 65+ should have a pneumonia shot). If your doctor has suggested a preventive medicine, please take it. By doing so, you are getting the full advantage of our high-tech scientific medical system. You will likely live longer and better. That’s pretty amazing for a little pill.
HOW TO TAKE CARE OF THOSE WHO ARE ILL
·         Keep careful notes. Even a minor illness can involve many tests, new medications and detailed home care. It's hard to remember a lot of information, such as the dosing of multiple drugs and complex hospital discharge notes, especially when you're stressed. Use a small notebook or the notes app on a smartphone to write down the names and contact numbers for everyone on the medical team. Include dates on your notes -- you may need them to provide a timeline to future specialists or to reconcile medical bills later on.
·         Monitor their care. Even though your loved one's primary doctor or surgeon may be the point person for other healthcare team members, you can be the backstop. Know and share your loved one's medical history, any daily medications, allergies and known drug side effects. If a new medication is prescribed, ask what it's for, possible side effects and whether it could have a negative interaction with any other drugs. Being an active member in care lessens the chance of medical errors.
·         Be present. If your loved one is in the hospital, your daily visit may be the one thing he or she looks forward to each day. Bring everyday items from home, like a robe or toiletries, to make the patient more comfortable.

·         Have a second-in-command. Being an advocate is like having another job. There may be times when you can't be there. Designate a close friend or relative who can step in for you.
·         Take care of yourself. A spouse or child's serious illness can take an emotional toll and you can't function optimally if you're run down. Eat a healthy diet and get enough sleep.

ENGLISH IS THE GATEWAY TO OTHER SUBJECTS
One of the most important international languages is English Language. It is considered as a requirement for studying abroad for several decades. In particular, most of the textbooks and subjects in all the different disciplines are in English, including mathematics textbooks.  
English is the language through which helps students to explore the world and access all other subject areas, apart from other languages. The more competent our students are in English, the more likely they are to succeed in the wider curriculum.
First of all, the student should differentiate between textbooks language and real English Language. For textbooks, student should study and read business textbooks line by line to get familiar with business terms, namely, economic, financial, accounting and management terms, such as fiscal and monetary policies, derivatives, materiality, accounting theory, pensions, capital leases, etc…. therefore, this process allow student write in business language. In addition, you should focus on grammar in order to write statements free from mistakes.
In the 1940s and 1950s, people across Latin America aspired to learn French, the “language of the world,” Today, things are different – English has become the most influential language in the world and in some other subjects.
English has channeled different subjects like: business studies, mathematics etc. English also serves as the most important in some schools. English is, almost certainly, the most important subject that a child can learn in school. Without knowing proper English, a child will not be able to communicate effectively with the English speaking nation. They would be shut off from education and other people in this country. A person who does not poses proper English limits his or her ability to achieve their highest potential. Knowledge of the English language is important to learn to be able to communicate with others, in the teaching of immigrant students, and in finding and maintaining a job. By assuming that students will learn proper communication skills without guidance is a big mistake.
One kind of problem that immigrants share is the need to learn the English language, even if learning English is a very hard language to learn. When immigrants do not learn English, they are fated to remain second class citizens or never become a citizen. They are ghettoized and never integrate into the main stream of society. They are forced to take low paying jobs, their children are raised in poverty, and they frequently do not finish high school, they take low paying jobs themselves, raise their own children in poverty and remain in this never ending cycle. Furthermore when you move to a different country or region, learning the local language will help you to communicate and fit in with the local community.

COGNITIVE DEVELOPMENT: THE THEORY OF JEAN PIAGET
Cognition refers to thinking and memory processes, and cognitive development refers to long-term changes in these processes. One of the most widely known perspectives about cognitive development is the cognitive stage theory of a Swiss psychologist named Jean Piaget. Piaget created and studied an account of how children and youth gradually become able to think logically and scientifically. Because his theory is especially popular among educators.
Piaget was a psychological constructivist: in his view, learning proceeded by the interplay of assimilation (adjusting new experiences to fit prior concepts) and accommodation (adjusting concepts to fit new experiences). The to-and-fro of these two processes leads not only to short-term learning, but also to long-term developmental change. The long-term developments are really the main focus of Piaget’s cognitive theory.
After observing children closely, Piaget proposed that cognition developed through distinct stages from birth through the end of adolescence. By stages he meant a sequence of thinking patterns with four key features:
1.    They always happen in the same order.
2.    No stage is ever skipped.
3.    Each stage is a significant transformation of the stage before it.
4.    Each later stage incorporated the earlier stages into itself.
Basically this is the “staircase” model of development was mentioned. Piaget proposed four major stages of cognitive development, and called them
(1) sensorimotor intelligence,
(2) preoperational thinking,
(3) concrete operational thinking, and
(4) formal operational thinking.
Each stage is correlated with an age period of childhood, but only approximately.
THE SENSORIMOTOR STAGE: BIRTH TO AGE 2
In Piaget’s theory, the sensorimotor stage is first, and is defined as the period when infants “think” by means of their senses and motor actions. As every new parent will attest, infants continually touch, manipulate, look, listen to, and even bite and chew objects. According to Piaget, these actions allow them to learn about the world and are crucial to their early cognitive development.
The infant’s actions allow the child to represent (or construct simple concepts of) objects and events. A toy animal may be just a confusing array of sensations at first, but by looking, feeling, and manipulating it repeatedly, the child gradually organizes her sensations and actions into a stable concept, toy animal. The representation acquires a permanence lacking in the individual experiences of the object, which are constantly changing. Because the representation is stable, the child “knows,” or at least believes, that toy animal exists even if the actual toy animal is temporarily out of sight. Piaget called this sense of stability object permanence, a belief that objects exist whether or not they are actually present. It is a major achievement of sensorimotor development, and marks a qualitative transformation in how older infants (24 months) think about experience compared to younger infants (6 months).
During much of infancy, of course, a child can only barely talk, so sensory motor development initially happens without the support of language. It might therefore seem hard to know what infants are thinking, but Piaget devised several simple, but clever experiments to get around their lack of language, and that suggest that infants do indeed represent objects even without being able to talk (Piaget, 1952). In one, for example, he simply hid an object (like a toy animal) under a blanket. He found that doing so consistently prompts older infants (18–24 months) to search for the object, but fails to prompt younger infants (less than six months) to do so. (You can try this experiment yourself if you happen to have access to young infant.) “Something” motivates the search by the older infant even without the benefit of much language, and the “something” is presumed to be a permanent concept or representation of the object.
THE PREOPERATIONAL STAGE: AGE 2 TO 7
In the preoperational stage, children use their new ability to represent objects in a wide variety of activities, but they do not yet do it in ways that are organized or fully logical. One of the most obvious examples of this kind of cognition is dramatic play, the improvised make-believe of preschool children. If you have ever had responsibility for children of this age, you have likely witnessed such play. Ashley holds a plastic banana to her ear and says: “Hello, Mom? Can you be sure to bring me my baby doll? OK!” Then she hangs up the banana and pours tea for Jeremy into an invisible cup. Jeremy giggles at the sight of all of this and exclaims: “Rinnng Oh Ashley, the phone is ringing again! You better answer it.” And on it goes.
In a way, children immersed in make-believe seem “mentally insane,” in that they do not think realistically. But they are not truly insane because they have not really taken leave of their senses. At some level, Ashley and Jeremy always know that the banana is still a banana and not really a telephone; they are merely representing it as a telephone. They are thinking on two levels at once—one imaginative and the other realistic. This dual processing of experience makes dramatic play an early example of metacognition, or reflecting on and monitoring of thinking itself. Metacognition is a highly desirable skill for success in school, one that teachers often encourage (Bredekamp & Copple, 1997; Paley, 2005). Partly for this reason, teachers of young children (preschool, kindergarten, and even first or second grade) often make time and space in their classrooms for dramatic play, and sometimes even participate in it themselves to help develop the play further.
The concrete operational stage: age 7 to 11
As children continue into elementary school, they become able to represent ideas and events more flexibly and logically. Their rules of thinking still seem very basic by adult standards and usually operate unconsciously, but they allow children to solve problems more systematically than before and therefore to be successful with many academic tasks. In the concrete operational stage, for example, a child may unconsciously follow the rule: “If nothing is added or taken away, then the amount of something stays the same.” This simple principle helps children to understand certain arithmetic tasks, such as in adding or subtracting zero from a number, as well as to do certain classroom science experiments, such as ones involving judgments of the amounts of liquids when mixed. Piaget called this period the concrete operational stage because children mentally “operate” on concrete objects and events. They are not yet able, however, to operate (or think) systematically about representations of objects or events. Manipulating representations is a more abstract skill that develops later, during adolescence.
Concrete operational thinking differs from preoperational thinking in two ways, each of which renders children more skilled as students. One difference is reversibility, or the ability to think about the steps of a process in any order. Imagine a simple science experiment, for example, such as one that explores why objects sink or float by having a child place an assortment of objects in a basin of water. Both the preoperational and concrete operational child can recall and describe the steps in this experiment, but only the concrete operational child can recall them in any order. This skill is very helpful on any task involving multiple steps—a common feature of tasks in the classroom. In teaching new vocabulary from a story, for another example, a teacher might tell students: “First make a list of words in the story that you do not know, then find and write down their definitions, and finally get a friend to test you on your list.” These directions involve repeatedly remembering to move back and forth between a second step and a first—a task that concrete operational students—and most adults—find easy, but that preoperational children often forget to do or find confusing. If the younger children are to do this task reliably, they may need external prompts, such as having the teacher remind them periodically to go back to the story to look for more unknown words
The other new feature of thinking during the concrete operational stage is the child’s ability to decenter, or focus on more than one feature of a problem at a time. There are hints of decentration in preschool children’s dramatic play, which requires being aware on two levels at once—knowing that a banana can be both a banana and a “telephone.” But the decentration of the concrete operational stage is more deliberate and conscious than preschoolers’ make-believe. Now the child can attend to two things at once quite purposely. Suppose you give students a sheet with an assortment of subtraction problems on it, and ask them to do this: “Find all of the problems that involve two-digit subtraction and that involve borrowing from the next column. Circle and solve only those problems.” Following these instructions is quite possible for a concrete operational student (as long as they have been listening!) because the student can attend to the two subtasks simultaneously—finding the two-digit problems and identifying which actually involve borrowing. (Whether the student actually knows how to “borrow” however, is a separate question.)
In real classroom tasks, reversibility and decentration often happen together. A well-known example of joint presence is Piaget’s experiments with conservation, the belief that an amount or quantity stays the same even if it changes apparent size or shape (Piaget, 2001; Matthews, 1998). Imagine two identical balls made of clay. Any child, whether preoperational or concrete operational, will agree that the two indeed have the same amount of clay in them simply because they look the same. But if you now squish one ball into a long, thin “hot dog,” the preoperational child is likely to say that the amount of that ball has changed either because it is longer or because it is thinner, but at any rate because it now looks different. The concrete operational child will not make this mistake, thanks to new cognitive skills of reversibility and decentration: for him or her, the amount is the same because “you could squish it back into a ball again” (reversibility) and because “it may be longer, but it is also thinner” (decentration). Piaget would say the concrete operational child “has conservation of quantity.”
The classroom examples described above also involve reversibility and decentration. As already mentioned, the vocabulary activity described earlier requires reversibility (going back and forth between identifying words and looking up their meanings); but it can also be construed as an example of decentration (keeping in mind two tasks at once—word identification and dictionary search). And as mentioned, the arithmetic activity requires decentration (looking for problems that meet two criteria and also solving them), but it can also be construed as an example of reversibility (going back and forth between subtasks, as with the vocabulary activity). Either way, the development of concrete operational skills support students in doing many basic academic tasks; in a sense they make ordinary schoolwork possible
The formal operational stage: age 11 and beyond
In the last of the Piagetian stages, the child becomes able to reason not only about tangible objects and events, but also about hypothetical or abstract ones. Hence it has the name formal operational stage—the period when the individual can “operate” on “forms” or representations. With students at this level, the teacher can pose hypothetical (or contrary-to-fact) problems: “What if the world had never discovered oil?” or “What if the first European explorers had settled first in California instead of on the East Coast of the United States?” To answer such questions, students must use hypothetical reasoning, meaning that they must manipulate ideas that vary in several ways at once, and do so entirely in their minds
The hypothetical reasoning that concerned Piaget primarily involved scientific problems. His studies of formal operational thinking therefore often look like problems that middle or high school teachers pose in science classes. In one problem, for example, a young person is presented with a simple pendulum, to which different amounts of weight can be hung (Inhelder & Piaget, 1958). The experimenter asks: “What determines how fast the pendulum swings: the length of the string holding it, the weight attached to it, or the distance that it is pulled to the side?” The young person is not allowed to solve this problem by trial-and-error with the materials themselves, but must reason a way to the solution mentally. To do so systematically, he or she must imagine varying each factor separately, while also imagining the other factors that are held constant. This kind of thinking requires facility at manipulating mental representations of the relevant objects and actions—precisely the skill that defines formal operations.
As you might suspect, students with an ability to think hypothetically have an advantage in many kinds of school work: by definition, they require relatively few “props” to solve problems. In this sense they can in principle be more self-directed than students who rely only on concrete operations—certainly a desirable quality in the opinion of most teachers. Note, though, that formal operational thinking is desirable but not sufficient for school success, and that it is far from being the only way that students achieve educational success. Formal thinking skills do not insure that a student is motivated or well-behaved, for example, nor does it guarantee other desirable skills, such as ability at sports, music, or art. The fourth stage in Piaget’s theory is really about a particular kind of formal thinking, the kind needed to solve scientific problems and devise scientific experiments. Since many people do not normally deal with such problems in the normal course of their lives, it should be no surprise that research finds that many people never achieve or use formal thinking fully or consistently, or that they use it only in selected areas with which they are very familiar (Case & Okomato, 1996). For teachers, the limitations of Piaget’s ideas suggest a need for additional theories about development—ones that focus more directly on the social and interpersonal issues of childhood and adolescence. The next sections describe some of these.
